Black Eyed Bean Tacos (and The Innocents)

This blog has moved! See this post on the relocated blog here:

Okey dokey! I am furnished with a 3G dongle, and I am slightly concerned at my 1GB (PER MONTH) allowance but I'll see how I get on...

I declared tonight Taco Thursday, and made these black eyed bean tacos...

I made the taco filling by sautéing chestnut mushrooms, black eyed beans and chopped tomatoes with a mix of cayenne pepper, cumin, paprika and oregano (with salt and pepper to taste). I added a little water to the pan and let it cook over a low heat for 10 minutes or so.

I made the salsa with chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, and chives.

Taco Thursday was accompanied by a viewing of one of my favourite horror films of all time. The Innocents is a 1961 adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw; more films than you might think have been loosely based on this story, which is a very classic haunted house tale. (I don't want to give anything away as, like all good tales of suspense, there is a bit of a twist...)

This particular adaptation was quite shocking in its day due, mostly, to the relationship between the young boy (Miles) and his governess Miss Giddens (played by Deborah Kerr, star of The King and I) rather than the horror.... I still think it's very effective though, and stands up tremendously well over 50 years later. God bless the BFI for releasing this on blu-ray!

  1. Ooo, I love The Innocents. It's so unnerving! Have you seen the 1994 adaptation, the one that sets it in the 60's?

It goes without saying that I also love tacos, so.

    1. Haha I hadn't heard of that but I just looked it up and it looks intriguing! I'll add it to the Lovefilm list :D

  2. Oh these tacos look so good nom nom nom nom :)
